Social Communication Therapy for Children

Building meaningful, functional communication

Understanding Social Communication

Social communication refers to how we use language and nonverbal communication to connect and interact with others in different social situations. These skills include initiating and maintaining conversations, understanding social cues and perspectives, interpreting nonverbal communication, and adapting communication to different people and environments. Neurodivergent children, including many autistic children and those with ADHD, may experience social communication differences rather than deficits and often benefit from support that respects their unique communication styles. Speech-language therapy focuses on building meaningful, functional communication skills based on each child's individual strengths, goals, and preferences. Therapy is neurodiversity-affirming, emphasizing self-advocacy, authentic communication, relationship-building, and confidence while honoring each child's individuality.

Our Approach

At Wolff Speech Language & Feeding, we believe that every child communicates in their own unique way. Our Speech-Language Pathologists provide individualized, neurodiversity-affirming social communication therapy that focuses on helping children build meaningful connections while honoring their individual communication styles, strengths, and preferences.

Therapy is tailored to each child's goals and may target conversational skills, perspective-taking, self-advocacy, emotional regulation, play skills, problem-solving, and navigating a variety of social situations. Through engaging, child-centered activities, we help children develop practical communication strategies that support success at home, school, and in their communities.

We also recognize that collaboration is essential. Our clinicians work closely with families, caregivers, and educators to provide education, coaching, and strategies that promote confidence, authentic communication, and meaningful participation across everyday environments.
