Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Personalized therapy for optimal oral function
What is a Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder?
An orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) occurs when the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue are not functioning in their optimal patterns. OMDs can affect breathing, chewing, swallowing, speech production, resting tongue posture, lip closure, and overall oral development. Children and adults with an OMD may present with mouth breathing, tongue thrust, low tongue resting posture, difficulty producing certain speech sounds, messy eating, or challenges following orthodontic treatment.
Speech and feeding therapy for orofacial myofunctional disorders focuses on improving the strength, coordination, awareness, and function of the oral and facial muscles needed for articulation and chewing/swallowing. Therapy includes individualized exercises and functional activities to establish healthy tongue resting posture, promote nasal breathing, improve lip closure, develop a mature swallow pattern, and support clear speech production. Because OMDs often involve multiple body systems, treatment may also include collaboration with orthodontists, dentists, ENTs, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care and the best possible outcomes.
How We Can Help
At Wolff Speech Language & Feeding, we provide comprehensive and individualized, OMT. Our SLPs have specialized training in the evaluation and treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders and understand how oral muscle function can impact breathing, swallowing, speech, feeding, dentition, and facial growth and development.
Our approach goes beyond simply teaching exercises. We begin with a thorough assessment to identify the underlying causes of oral dysfunction and develop a personalized treatment plan that focuses on creating lasting, functional changes.
We believe the best outcomes occur through a collaborative approach. Our clinicians work closely with families and, when appropriate, coordinate care with orthodontists, dentists, ENTs, lactation consultants, and other healthcare providers to ensure each client receives comprehensive, whole-person care. By combining specialized expertise, individualized treatment, and ongoing support, we help children and adults build healthy oral habits that promote lifelong function and overall wellness.
OMT is available for children ages 4+ and adults. For OMT, we offer both, home-based and teletherapy sessions.
