<image:title>Blog - Keeping Communication Growing: Summer Speech & Language Tips for Families</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Narrate! Narrate! Narrate! Whether you’re at the beach or the grocery store, become a play-by-play announcer for your child. Parallel Talk: Describe what your child is doing (“You’re building a huge sandcastle! You put the blue bucket on top.”) Self-Talk: Describe what you are doing (“I’m slicing the juicy watermelon for our picnic. It’s so cold!”) Why it works: This builds vocabulary and sentence structure without the pressure of "say this" or "repeat after me." 2. Kitchen Chemistry Summer treats are perfect for sensory exploration, narrative generation, describing, following directions and more! Make Popsicles: Talk about each step you take to make the popsicles and describe the temperatures, flavors, shapes, textures, etc. Before beginning, create a list of ingredients you will need and each step to follow and voila! you have just targeted executive functioning! Build a Taco Bar: This is great for picky eaters. Let them explore different textures (crunchy shells vs. soft beans) in a DIY setting. Sequencing and Reflexive Questioning: Ask, "What do we need to do first? What comes next?" 3. Road Trip "I Spy" Turn long car rides into a game of descriptive language. Instead of just naming objects, use clues: "I spy something that is red, has four wheels, and makes a loud siren sound." This encourages describing, working memory, and making inferences. 4. Water Play Whether you have an older child or a younger child, water play will help your child cool down while working on so many language skills! When Swimming: Play games like Marco Polo and Sharks and Minnows to continue practicing turn-taking, following directions, and cooperative play. Treasure Diving: Toss different objects in the pool and then describe one object at a time. Your child has to swim to that object as fast as they can! Simon Says is a great way to work on following directions and working memory skills and can easily be played in the pool! Water Table: Water tables offer a fun and sensory opportunity for children to engage in many types of play while encouraging language skills! Pretend Play: Have a tea party or turn the water table in to a pretend kitchen! Use trucks and cars and have a race or put on your very own Monster Truck water show. Add soap and turn it into a car or toy wash. Hide objects in the water table and describe them as your child finds them. Ice can make for long lasting fun and language opportunities: Freeze small toys, beads, or flowers in ice blocks, then use warm water droppers to melt them. Then have your child identify what they found. You can also have them describe the object and make guesses as they start to slowly melt the ice block. If you have them estimate how long it might take them then you just targeted some executive functioning skills! Chalk There are endless opportunities to encourage language skills when playing with calk! Create an “obstacle course” where your child has to complete different actions. For example, draw dots and your child has to stomp on them, draw a volcano and your child has to jump over it! Take turns drawing pictures and guessing what each person drew. Give clues (descriptions) or ask questions to gain more information to make a guess. Speech and language development doesn’t pause for summer—and it doesn’t need to feel like work. By weaving communication into everyday experiences, you’re helping your child build skills that will carry into the next school year and beyond. Want more personalized ideas? If you’re worried about the "summer slide" or want to keep your child’s momentum going, feel free to reach out to us at Wolff Speech Language & Feeding. We’re here to help your child find their voice, one summer day at a time! Have a wonderful summer!</image:caption>
